Safety - Part I

Safety is an important aspect of working with robotic arms. The 3 principles of robots developed by science fiction writers like Isaac Asimov ring true for robotics today:

  1. A robot must not harm a human being, nor through inaction allow one to come to harm.
  2. A robot must obey a human being, unless it conflicts with the first law.
  3. A robot must protect itself from harm, unless it conflicts with the first or second laws.

Saftey Enhacement Devices

Some important safety enhancement devices are described below and a number of others are list at the bottom.

Presence Sensing Devices

Three important types of presence sensing devices are proximity sensing devices, light curtains and presence sensing mats

Proximity Sensing Device

The two main technologies used with proximity sensing devices are Ultrasonic and Laser.

Light Curtains

Light curtains require less maintaince, on the end of the operator, compared to traditional guarding methods, while stilling providing security for the operator.

Presence Sensing Mats

Presence sensing mats have two major advantages: one is the full visibility and access to the work area and the other is the simplicity of operation.

Interlock Devices

Interlock devices are a vital security device, since the power source connection is linked to the state of the device. When the device is open, then connection between the workcell and power source is severed. Likewise, when the device is closed, then the workcell is connected to power source. Below are some examples of different classes of interlock devices.

Tongue operated actuation

Hinged Mechnical Interlock Switch

Cam Operated Mechnical Interlock
